viscose, linen, cotton: a no-nonsense fabric guide

Knowing your fabrics means smarter shopping. Here's what to look for on the label and why it matters.

Viscose, Linen, Cotton: A No-Nonsense Fabric Guide

Ever bought something that looked amazing online, only to feel cheap or clingy in person? Nine times out of ten, it's a fabric issue. Understanding basic fabric properties will save you money and closet regret.

Cotton: The Everyday Hero

Breathable, durable, and easy to care for. Look for 100% cotton or cotton blends for tees, button-downs, and casual dresses. The catch: pure cotton wrinkles easily. If that bothers you, look for cotton-modal or cotton-spandex blends.

Linen: The Summer Essential

Nothing beats linen in heat. It's lightweight, naturally cooling, and actually gets softer with every wash. The catch: it wrinkles — a lot. But here's the thing: linen wrinkles are part of the charm. Embrace them.

Viscose (Rayon): The Chameleon

Semi-synthetic, made from wood pulp. Viscose drapes beautifully and feels silky, which is why it's popular in blouses and dresses. The catch: it can shrink in hot water and may not hold up to frequent washing. Always check care labels — many viscose pieces need cold water or hand wash.

Polyester: When It Works (and When It Doesn't)

Polyester gets a bad rap, but modern poly blends can be great in performance wear, structured pieces, and outerwear. Where it fails: anything that sits directly against skin in warm weather. It doesn't breathe, and it traps odor.

The Shopping Hack

Always check the fabric content tag before buying. A $40 blouse in 100% viscose will drape and feel better than a $100 blouse in cheap polyester. Price doesn't always equal quality — fabric content does.
